Why taking action creates success

Updated: Jun 19, 2018

Because no action results in no change...duh!

Look at the biker above. He (or she) did not get there by doing nothing. Something in him said, "Get out there, experience more." At some point, he mustered up the time, money and effort to start mountain biking. Look what his actions resulted in. Now, I don't know what his view is in the picture but I know it's an awesome view for us. Spectators only.

Be at Risk

“What we think or what we know or what we believe is, in the end, of little consequence. The only consequence is in what we do." — John Ruskin

With risk comes reward. But not all risk comes with reward. It is only in hindsight that we get to label the outome as good/bad, great/terrible. However, few can say that leaning into risk was not rewarding to some extent. I remember taking a college marketing class that, from the outset, I was not interested in taking. I ended up making an unfavorable grade but the lessens learned still serve me to this day. Had I fully embraced the opportunity before me, the outcome would have been different. I regret the negative outcome on my grade point but the lesson learned is forever (and priceless). Taking risk is a kin to facing one's fears. And there is greatness in taking action, facing one's fears and celebrating the success!

Be Relevant

Look around you at the world. There are extraordinary things being done. I have 400+ TV channels to watch and occasionally I will stumble across a "world" (non-US) channel or show. I find myself fascinated about life, technology discoveries and social issues going on in countries far away. I look at some of these extraordinary people and think how precarious their lives are compared to mine. I find these other-worldly perspective very motivating. So when I am dissilusioned (often) watching US-centric news and shows, I start flipping around to find a new perspective. So, if you are feeling stuck or just blah about life changes, get a new perspective from other people or other places. Get educated, more knowledgeable about your dream and the path(es) that can be taken to get there. Knowledge is power but the ability to share knowledge is empowering. Find someone who lives your dream and you will likely find someone glad to talk about their path to success. Take action. Dig in and learn. Become relevant. Be relevant.

Stun Yourself

“Leap and the net will appear.” — Zen Saying

I love that Zen saying but it still gives me a clinch in my chest. However, I can look back in my life at things I have done that I am still amazed I did. Most people don't got to graduate school once let alone twice. But that was what it took for me career-wise to follow my dreams. Most shocking was my college GPA was mediocre but my graduate GPAs were stellar. When you dream, dream big. Pursue your dream with complete abandon. Surround yourself with people who are your allies and share your dream with them. Take that risk. Keep your naysayers at a distance. Figure out what some of the obstacles may be along the way and put plans on layaway to deal with them should they occur. Keeping you motivated and helping you break down obstacles is where a coach is key to your success. But the actions and the results are all yours. Take action. Stun yourself.

Get Inspired

Hopefully, you are already inspired to live the life you want to have. Few things are out of reach but you will never know until you make the decision to take action. Sitting on the fence of indecision is just a ticket for splinters. Maybe when you are in enough pain, you'll hop off the fence and take action. Maybe you already have taken action. Get a coach.
